A template is changed when it is converted to a virtual machine. This activity does not result in the creation of a duplicate as it convert a Template to a Virtual Machine only. To change a template, you need to convert it to a virtual machine. If you don’t require the template to be preserved as a golden image for virtual machine deployment, you can convert it to a virtual machine.
Prerequisites to Convert a Template to a Virtual Machine
Make sure to verify that you have the following privileges:
Virtual machine > Provisioning – Mark the source templates as virtual machines.
Resource > On the resource pool where the virtual machine will run, assign it to a resource pool.
Procedure to Convert a Template to a Virtual Machine
- Start the Convert Template to Virtual Machine wizard.

|a Right-click any inventory object that is a valid parent object of a virtual machine and select New Virtual Machine.|
b On the Select a creation type page, select Convert template to virtual machine and click Next.
c On the Select a template page of the wizard, select a template to deploy from the list.
|From a template||Right-click the template and select Convert to Virtual Machine.|
- Select the host, cluster, vApp, or resource pool for the virtual machine to run in on the Select a compute resource page. Next should be selected.
The results of the compatibility checks are displayed in the Compatibility pane.
- On Ready to complete page, review all the provided settings and click Finish.
The virtual machine appears in the inventory.
