Error opening workbook. Make sure excel is installed. S-3

When you will try to open Excel with the “Excel application scope,” you would receive the following error:

“System.Exception: Error openning workbook. Make sure Excel is installed —> System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast COM object of type ‘Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.ApplicationClass’ to interface type ‘Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Application’. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID ‘{000208D5-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}’ failed due to the following error: Error loading type library/DLL. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80029C4A (TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY)).”

We tried to discover many entries of office after reading that the problem was most likely in regedit, but I couldn’t find anything. Instead, I discovered a folder titled “0” under the TypeLib-key for Excel and Outlook, as well as directories labeled Win32 and Win64. Because I only have a Win64 version of Office, I modified both key values to match my current EXCEL.EXE and MSOUTL.OLB installations. UiPath now locates them.

The path for the folders in question within regedit:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT → TypeLib → {00020813-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT → TypeLib → {00062FFF-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Under each of these you have folders regarding various office versions.

And we need to remove Win32 entry, if we are using Office 64-bit. Or delete Win64 entry if we are using Office 32-bit

If reinstalling the Excel file doesn’t work, you might try disabling the COM add-in.

Select Options from the File menu, then Add-Ins from the Options menu.

Select COM Add-Ins from the Manage list at the bottom of the screen, then click Go.

Click OK after removing one of the add-ins from the list.

Double-click the icon or file name that you’re trying to open again to open the excel worksheet.

Alternatively, you can add the Excel path to your Windows environment and then restart your session. I hope that this will assist you in resolving the problem.

Excel not responding, hangs, freezes or stops working

Now we’ll go over some troubleshooting steps that might help you fix the most typical difficulties with Excel, such as when it doesn’t react, when it hangs or freezes when you launch it, or when you access an Excel workbook.

Start Excel in Safe Mode

Safe mode allows you to start Excel without having to deal with any of the default startup apps. Excel can be started in safe mode by pressing and holding Ctrl when starting the software, or by using the /safe switch (excel.exe /safe) from the command line. When you run Excel in safe mode, it ignores things like a different startup location, different toolbars, the xlstart folder, and Excel add-ins. COM add-ins, on the other hand, are not allowed.
If issue is yet not resolved after you start Excel in safe mode, continue with next steps on this list.

Install Latest Update

It’s possible that you’ll need to set Windows Update to download and install recommended updates automatically. By replacing out-of-date files and correcting vulnerabilities, installing any important advice and appropriate updates can often correct problems.

Continue to another option on this list if applying the latest Office updates does not cure your problem.

Make sure Excel isn’t being used by another program.

This information will be displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the Excel window if Excel is being used by another process. If you try to do anything else while Excel is open, it may not respond. Allow the current task to complete its task before moving on to the next step.

Continue to the next item in the list if Excel is not being used by another operation.

Investigate possible issues with add-ins on this list.

Do one from the following:

  • If you are running with Windows 10, choose Start > All apps > Windows System > Run > type Excel /safe in the Run box, then click OK.
  • Windows 8, click Run in the Apps menu > type Excel /safe in the Run box, then click OK.
  • Windows 7, click Start > type Excel /safe in Search programs and files, then click OK.
  • If the issue is resolved, click File > Options Add-ins.
  • Select COM Add-ins, and click Go.
  • Clear all the check boxes in the list, and click OK.
  • Close and restart Excel.

If the problem persists after restarting Excel, start enabling your add-ins one by one until it does. This will help you determine which add-in is causing the issue. Each time you enable an add-in, make sure to restart Excel.

Continue to the next steps if disabling add-ins did not address your problem.

Check the contents and details of the Excel file.

Check to see if your file was created by a third party.

Perform a selective startup to see if any programs, processes, or services are incompatible with Excel.

Office programs should be repaired.

Evaluate your antivirus software to determine if it’s up to date or if it’s conflicting with Excel.
